The Colts may be looking to add a cornerback in free agency, and a reunion with Patrick Robinson could help their pass defense.
The Colts’ need for a cornerback this offseason will depend, in part, on whether or not they bring back Rashaan Melvin, who is set to be a free agent.
Even if Indianapolis decides to re-sign Melvin, they probably need an upgrade at the slot cornerback position to go along with Melvin and Quincy Wilson on the outside.
Patrick Robinson had a breakout year winning a Super Bowl with the Eagles last season. Robinson had 4 interceptions and broke up another 18 passes during the regular season, and he also added a pick-six against the Vikings in the NFC Championship Game.
According to Pro Football Focus, Robinson allowed a completion percentage of just 54.5% into his coverage in the slot, which was the second-best rate in the NFL.
Robinson performed much worse during his one season with the Colts in 2016, but it’s possible he learned something in Philadelphia that would make him much better in a return to Indianapolis.
Robinson is capable of providing Pro Bowl-level play at slot cornerback while some of the Colts’ younger defensive backs continue to develop, and I think Chris Ballard should take a hard look at signing him in free agency.
