One of the biggest needs for the Colts this offseason is at the inside linebacker position. Could a veteran free agent like NaVarro Bowman be a solution for that problem?

It feels like NaVorro Bowman has been in the league forever, but he is still only 29 years old.

Bowman missed an entire season while he was recovering from a broken leg. However, he bounced back immediately from that injury with an All-Pro season in 2015.

He hasn’t made an All-Pro team since that year, but he has continued to play at a high level over the past two seasons.

Bowman was traded to the Raiders after seven years with the 49ers halfway through last season. Bowman didn’t have much talent surrounding him on Oakland’s defense, but he did help improve that unit after joining the team.

Bowman played on a one-year contract worth around $2.6 million last year, and he may be willing to play for a similar deal in 2018. Signing Bowman to a one-year contract this offseason could give the Colts a high-level player for a year while they try to develop some young talent at linebacker.

Chris Ballard had some success taking a chance on an inside linebacker with a one-year contract last season as he brought in Jon Bostic on a cheap deal, and he was easily Indianapolis’ best inside linebacker last year.

Picking up NaVorro Bowman and re-signing Jon Bostic could give the Colts a quality duo of inside linebackers next season. Indianapolis doesn’t have to commit to either of those players long-term, and they can focus on selecting an inside linebacker prospect or two in the draft.
