The Bears have released Jerrell Freeman immediately making him a free agent. The Colts might be ready for a reunion with their former linebacker.
When Jerrell Freeman is on the field, he is one of the best linebackers in the entire league.
He was a dominant run defender with the Bears in 2016 with 86 tackles and 4 run stuffs in 12 games. He’s capable of holding his own and making a couple of plays in pass coverage as well.
Unfortunately, Freeman’s issues with performance-enhancing drugs have kept him on the sidelines.
He was suspended for four games in 2016 for his first offense with PED’s, and he was suspended for ten games after he failed another drug test last season. Freeman will still have to serve two games of his most recent suspension to begin the 2018 season.
The Colts can’t afford to be picky at the inside linebacker position. If they can’t re-sign Jon Bostic in free agency, the cupboard would be extremely bare at linebacker with a lack of talent at that position.
Indianapolis has a different front office and coaching staff from Freeman’s days with the Colts, but people around the NFL know that he can play at a Pro Bowl-level if he can stay on the field.
If I were Chris Ballard, I’d consider bringing Freeman in on a one-year deal while he proves he can stay out of trouble.
