The Colts had the worst pass defense in the NFL last season, and adding a cornerback or two in free agency could go a long way in improving that weakness.
Indianapolis suffered a ton of injuries in the secondary last year, which is a main reason why they struggled defending the pass all season long. However, even if they’re fully healthy next year, the group of defensive backs currently on the roster probably aren’t good enough to field a playoff-caliber defense.
This year’s class of free agent cornerbacks could provide a couple of solutions to the Colts’ problems in the secondary, and one of those qualified free agents is T.J. Carrie.
Oakland’s defense was torn up all year long, but that wasn’t necessarily T.J. Carrie’s fault. Carrie racked up 70 tackles last season, which helps explain why the Raiders’ defense was so bad.
Carrie was solid in coverage breaking up 9 passes last season, and he also showed some ability as a playmaker with 2 fumble recoveries. At 6′ 0″ 206 pounds, Carrie has the size to match up with some of the league’s biggest receivers, but he also has enough speed to cover the NFL’s fastest deep threats.
I wouldn’t expect Carrie’s contract to break the bank this offseason, and he could be a worthwhile investment for the Colts’ front office.
