The Colts could use some more explosive athletes along their defensive line in 2018, and free agent Sheldon Richardson could provide that.
Chris Ballard made a ton of improvements along Indianapolis’ defensive line last season.
He brought in Jabaal Sheard and John Simon to improve the pass rush. The Colts also signed Johnathan Hankins and Al Woods as big run-stuffers. Additionally, Margus Hunt and Barkevious Mingo had solid seasons as rotational defensive linemen.
Because of Ballard’s success in upgrading the defensive line last season, I don’t think the pass rush should be a top priority this offseason. However, the Colts have the third-most cap room in the NFL and a top-three draft pick, so they should be looking to upgrade nearly every position on the roster.
Sheldon Richardson could be a valuable piece because he is capable of playing inside and outside, he’s solid in run defense, and he can provide a pass rush.
Richardson is a very confusing player. He racked up 13 sacks combined over 2014 and 2015 including a Pro Bowl appearance, but his production has taken a hit over the last two seasons.
He only has 2.5 sacks over the past two years, but he was playing out of position in 2016 at linebacker, and he spent all of last season getting used to a new defensive scheme in Seattle.
Richardson also has some off-the-field issues which could cause teams to shy away from him in free agency.
I’m still a believer in Richardson’s talent, and I would consider taking a chance on him for the right price in free agency.
