2018 Colts Possible Free Agent Targets: Running Back Dion Lewis
By Andrew Ites
The Colts are in a peculiar spot at the running back position this offseason, and they may be looking to bring in a tailback or two in free agency.
It remains to be seen whether Frank Gore will return to Indianapolis next season. And while Marlon Mack showed promise in his rookie year, he may not be ready to carry the load in his second NFL season.
If Gore doesn’t come back or the Colts aren’t confident in Mack’s ability to be a feature back, Chris Ballard may look to add some running back talent in free agency.
Other than Le’Veon Bell, Dion Lewis is the most dynamic potential free agent running back in this year’s class.
Lewis racked up over 1,100 yards from scrimmage this season in the Patriots’ deep backfield as he finally proved he could stay healthy for all 16 games. Lewis has had trouble staying on the field in the past, but he may have put that behind him during the best year of his career.
Those injury concerns will likely depreciate his value on the open market, but that could allow a team to get Lewis on a bit of a bargain contract. Lewis also may take a pay cut in order to follow Josh McDaniels to Indianapolis after they just had a career year together in New England.
Dion Lewis is an exciting player, but there are enough question marks surrounding him that make him a risky free agent. I’d be okay with taking a chance on him with a short-term contract, but it has to be at the right price.
