Protecting Andrew Luck needs to be priority number one this offseason. Bringing in a very solid guard like Andrew Norwell could help shore up that offensive line.
The guard position is a major area of concern on the Colts roster.
Jack Mewhort has played near a Pro Bowl level when he’s been healthy in Indianapolis, but he was shut down for the year after just five games last season, and he is set to become a free agent this offseason. The rest of the Colts’ guards are uninspiring to say the least.
While tackle has become the glorious position on the offensive line, protecting the quarterback and creating movement in the running game begins along the interior with the guards and center. That’s why the Colts should spend a big chunk of their projected $84 million of cap space on an elite guard.
Andrew Norwell made his first All-Pro team this season, and he’s hitting free agency in the prime of his career at just 26 years old.
If the Colts can get Jack Mewhort healthy, re-sign him this offseason, and bring in Andrew Norwell in free agency, they could legitimately have one of the best interior offensive lines in the league with those two guards surrounding Ryan Kelly at center.
If Chris Ballard could find a solid right tackle to put on the opposite side of Anthony Castonzo, the Colts’ problems along the offensive line could finally be solved.
