The Colts may be looking to pick up a premier cornerback in free agency this offseason, and Trumaine Johnson could be just what they need.
Trumaine Johnson has been playing under the franchise tag for each of the past two seasons, and it’s unclear whether the Rams would like to offer him a long-term deal. If Johnson hits the open market, he could be considered as the top cornerback available in free agency.
Johnson has put up double-digit pass breakup numbers in each of the past three seasons, which began with his breakout year in 2015 where he picked off 7 passes with 17 pass breakups.
The 6′ 1″ 205-pound cornerback is able to matchup with big, physical receivers as well as small, and speedy receivers. He’s only 28 years old and capable of playing at a high level for at least a few more years.
Johnson made a little over $16.7 million on the franchise tag last season, and he’ll likely break the bank with an enormous contract if he makes it to free agency. The Colts have the third-most cap space available this offseason, but they have plenty of other holes on the roster that need to be filled before 2018.
If the Colts can re-sign Rashaan Melvin and Quincy Wilson takes a step forward in his second NFL season, Indianapolis could have a solid pair of cornerbacks next year. However, neither of those propositions are sure things, which could make Trumaine Johnson an intriguing option.
