The Indianapolis Colts, along with every other team in the NFL, are in the midst of free agency for the next several days, and so far, it's been slow for Colts fans. Much to the dismay of many, general manager Chris Ballard does not, in fact, appear to have learned from his mistakes; he is notoriously stingy in free agency, and while he's claimed 2025 will be different, so far it seems to be much of the same.
However, insiders have indicated that a signing may be imminent, and it's for someone who would be a great asset to the Colts defense: Jevon Holland.
"Safety Jevon Holland still available, but among teams expected to have interest during the process are the #Panthers #Commanders #Colts and #Titans."Jeremy Fowler, ESPN
The Miami Dolphins previously announced they would not be using the franchise tag on Holland, which gave the Colts an opportunity that, it appears, Ballard may actually be taking.
Holland was drafted in the second round of the 2021 NFL Draft, and his rookie contract is just now ending. He has been a strong player, though 2024 was his worst season yet. Many have blamed this on a change in Miami's defensive scheme, as opposed to problems with Holland himself, and even at his worst, he's still a good safety, which the Colts desperately need at the moment.
Typically, Ballard doesn't aggressively pursue free agents, and the hope has been that Holland will be the difference. Paired with Nick Cross, the Colts would have one of the best safety duos in the league. And considering the Colts just hired a new defensive coordinator - Lou Anarumo - Holland could easily return to his better form after getting away from Miami. Will Ballard, for once, do what it takes to make this happen?
