The combine has returned to Indianapolis again this season. I might be biased, but it should never leave Indianapolis, as we always put on a great event. This is the first time that both Ballard and Steichen have met the media since the end of the season. This is the 9th combine for Chris Ballard, and his job security could not be more scrutinized. This is his last chance to bring this team together and finally win an AFC South title. This presser was a lot of the same things we hear from him every year. Time will tell if this is the year he finally changes his strategy.
Open Competition For Anthony Richardson
When asked about the need for competition this upcoming season, Ballard was adamant that it will be a focus. When pressed to ask about competition for Richardson and the quarterback position, his answer was simple and concise. “It’ll be open.”
Colts GM Chris Ballard on Anthony Richardson and the quarterback position: “Us adding competition will help up everyone’s game.” And as for that competition? “It’ll be open.”

This is not a big surprise to much of the fanbase, but it brings some clarity to all of us. I have always been in the camp to allow him to learn from his failures, but this season must be different. With the Colts not changing any of the offensive staff around him, the pressure is on all the team to get this right. Who they choose to bring in for his competition will be interesting to see. However, this fan base knows this regime will be defined by how Richardson progresses this season, so don’t expect any huge changes.
Figuring Out The Offensive Line
This seemed to be a large topic of conversation with the media. He was coy about veteran Braden Smith and the personal matters he is still attending to, but did talk about impending free agent center Ryan Kelly. He will be talking to Kelly and his representatives in the coming days, but it has not seemed very fruitful so far. It should be mentioned that Braden Smith has stated he wants to keep playing football.

Ballard raved about the progress and future of last year’s draft picks (Bortolini and Goncalves), and how they can fit into the picture for next season. His tone seemed to bring one of change to the offensive line this year, especially towards the right side of the line. Starters Ryan Kelly, Will Fries, and Braden Smith could all be elsewhere next season.
Obtaining Lou Anarumo and Staff
Ballard did mention some nice things about being able to obtain Lou Anarumo this offseason. He allowed Anarumo to pick his staff, and they were happy with the coaches they were able to bring on, singling out new secondary coach Chris Hewitt as the real surprise coach they were able to hire on the coaching staff.
Ballard expects this defense to be very different than last season. Last season, we saw the same old game plan week after week. With Anarumo, we can expect more hidden coverages and, hopefully, some better tackling. The overall scheme change will bring a change to the pass rush and accentuate the strengths of the players on the roster. Ballard mentioned that he expects Samson Ebukam to return, and that Laiatu Latu could be moved around and have a more specific role.
