Shane Steichen announces Bernhard Raimann will be out for Colts vs. Jets
During Sunday's Week 10 loss to the Buffalo Bills, Indianapolis Colts left tackle Bernhard Raimann had to exit the game with a knee injury. Since then, there has been little update about the extent of Raimann's injury - but today, head coach Shane Steichen has given an update for at least Week 11.
In a press release, Steichen said Raimann will not play in the Indianapolis Colts - New York Jets game. While there weren't any details about what happened to Raimann's knee or how long he'll be out, Steichen said it will be "week-to-week." Raimann had just come off of concussion protocol.
The Athletic's James Boyd tweeted that Raimann did not practice at all this week, and was seen wearing a leg brace and walking with a limp.
Raimann will likely be replaced again by Matt Goncalves, and this means that the Colts will, once again, have three rookies on their offensive line this Sunday. It's a huge blow to the Colts as they prepare to welcome back Anthony Richardson as QB1; Richardson, who has struggled with accuracy issues, will need to be well-protected so he can have time to assess the field and make accurate passes, as well as have open lanes to run through.
In addition to Raimann, the Colts offensive line lost center Ryan Kelly to injured reserve earlier this month, and offensive guard Will Fries to a season-ending tibia fracture in October.
Raimann is originally from Austria, and began playing American football for the Vienna Vikings. He played football at Central Michigan University, and began his collegiate career at tight end before being moved to offensive tackle. He was named Offensive Player of the Year for the Mid-American Conference by Pro Football Focus in 2021.
Selected by the Colts in the third round of the 2022 NFL draft, Raimann took over the starting left tackle position that season from Matt Pryor, and started 11 of the final 13 games. In 2023, he played 15 games and saw a lot of improvement, committing fewer penalties, and allowing less sacks; he has improved even more this season, and though Goncalves has done well in his place, Raimann's loss will be a huge blow to the Colts' struggling offensive line.
