Offensive guard Will Fries was injured in the Week 5 Indianapolis Colts game against the Jacksonville Jaguars. It will surely be a serious blow for the Colts team, which is already riddled with injuries.
Towards the end of the third quarter, Fries went down, with what appeared to be an injury to his lower right leg. The Colts linemen took a knee around him, while trainers brought out an air cast. The entire Colts bench cleared in support of Fries as he was carted off the field, strapped to a backboard. CBS refused to replay the injury, leading to speculation on social media about its severity. It is being rumored that he broke his right leg. As he was carted off the field, he was surrounded not just by his Colts teammates, but by Jaguars players, too.
Fries was drafted by the Colts in 2021, and named the starting right guard in 2022.
Dalton Tucker has taken Fries' place as right guard. Tucker graduated from Marshall University, where he allowed only three sacks and 19 pressures in his last two years on the team. He was unselected in the 2024 draft, and then signed with the Colts as a free agent.
The Colts have had many injuries over the past several weeks, most notably starting QB Anthony Richardson and running back Jonathan Taylor. Center Ryan Kelly and right tackle Braden Smith also were not able to play this week. On defense, they're missing Tyquan Lewis, Kwity Paye, Kenny Moore II, DeForest Buckner, Juju Brents, and Samson Ebukam. Fries' injury is one the Colts don't need right now as they struggle to gain momentum going into the rest of the 2024 season.
