How many undrafted free agents will the Colts be able to sign after the draft?
After the 2023 NFL Draft, the Indianapolis Colts, along with the rest of the NFL, will try signing the players that went undrafted. How many UDFAs can Indy sign?
The 2023 NFL Draft is just over a week away. Soon, hundreds of players’ dreams will come true. Unfortunately, a ton of players will go undrafted, but their journey won’t be over. All of the players that aren’t drafted become undrafted free agents. Some of them will immediately sign with teams and others will get camp invites.
Some of the NFL’s greatest players of all time are undrafted free agents. The Indianapolis Colts currently have an elite undrafted free agent in Kenny Moore II. After not being drafted in 2017, Moore signed with the New England Patriots. He was ultimately cut by New England and claimed by the Colts. In Indy, Moore turned into a Pro Bowl defensive back.
Indianapolis will be hoping to find another undrafted free agent that can turn into a star. We know the Colts have nine draft picks, but how many undrafted free agents could they add? Jason Fitzgerald of Over The Cap recently estimated the number of UDFAs each team will be able to sign. To do so, Fitzgerald took “the sum of current rostered players as estimated by OTC and draft picks each team holds, and subtract that from 90.”
The result of that math was seven for the Colts, meaning Indianapolis is only projected to be able to sign seven undrafted free agents. That’s the fifth-least in the NFL.
Colts projected to sign seven undrafted free agents
That's a much smaller number than the 22 undrafted free agents that Indianapolis signed after last year’s draft. In last season’s group, several of the undrafted free agents made the roster, including guys like Dallis Flowers and JoJo Domann. Flowers established himself as a kick-returning threat as a rookie, and has a chance to start at corner next season.
Since this year’s group will be drastically smaller, the chance of finding quality guys is lower. However, anything could happen. Whether it be seven players or 22, all it takes is one player having a really strong training camp, and they could soon be making big plays in the regular season.
