As the Indianapolis Colts prep for their second preseason game of the summer, fans have to be pleased with what they're seeing from rookie second-rounder Adonai Mitchell. The Texas product has looked every bit the part of a starting receiver during training camp and that's great news for a Colts team that needs all the help they can in what's suddenly become a competitive AFC South.
In this particular play from training camp, Mitchell jukes the defender assigned to him multiple times before still finding a way to catch the ball in the end zone for a would-be touchdown. Of course, training camp isn't the real deal but fans would absolutely prefer to see guys balling out in training camp rather than disappointing.
Adonai Mitchell is going to be fun for Colts fans to watch
The Colts spent their second-round pick on Mitchell after the former Longhorn racked up 845 receiving yards and 11 touchdowns during his final year at Texas. With the injury to Josh Downs, the Colts might be asking more of Mitchell than originally anticipated but so far, it looks as though the rookie is up for the task.
Mitchell was the 11th wide receiver off the board in the NFL Draft and the second taken from his school (Xavier Worthy went late in the first round to the Chiefs). While it wasn't a surprise to see receivers like Marvin Harrison Jr., Malik Nabers, and Rome Odunze go early in the draft, Mitchell being the 11th receiver drafted was a bit surprising given the 2023 season he had.
That being said, Colts fans will be thrilled if Mitchell ends up being a steal. So far, he's looking like he could be just that but we're only one preseason game into the 2024 campaign so there's still a ton of football to be played and hopefully a lengthy Adonai Mitchell career to look forward to.
