Josh Downs suffers tough lower leg injury right before Colts preseason opener
By Mike Luciano
The Indianapolis Colts are just a few days away from returning to the football field and suiting up against the Denver Broncos in their preseason opener. Even with the game just around the corner, injuries continue to plague young stars like emerging receiver Josh Downs.
Despite the presence of second-rounder Alec Pierce and two promising rookies in Adonai Mitchell and Anthony Gould, Downs is projected to start the season as the No. 2 wide receiver on the depth chart behind Michael Pittman Jr. Just a few days before his sophomore season unveiling, the injury bug paid a visit.
Downs was tackled by safety Nick Cross and came up limping with what appears to be an ankle injury. Downs had to be helped off the field, and he was unable to put any weight on his lower leg. This is truly a nightmare situation for Indianapolis.
To make matters worse, the injury happened in a 7-on-7 drill where Cross brought Downs all the way to the ground. While the team will assuredly provide an update on the injury, this isn't exactly ideal for a Colts team that needs to stay healthy to compete in the AFC South.
Colts WR Josh Downs suffers ankle injury at practice
Downs has already formed a strong connection with quarterback Anthony Richardson. The fact that Downs recorded 68 catches and just under 800 yards during his rookie season with Gardner Minshew primarily throwing him the ball shows the true skill he has at such a young age.
If Downs is expected to miss any period of time, look for Pierce to move into the WR2 role while Mitchell is the favorite for the Cincinnati alum's vacated spot. Mitchell's speed may make him a better fit in the slot than Pierce, who could be better served as an outside receiver.
Shane Steichen was reportedly furious with Cross for tackling Downs to the ground in what was supposed to be a relatively low-speed drill. As a result of this tackle, Indy may need to enter their season with one of their biggest playmakers either sidelined or working his way back from an ankle ailment.
