Discarded former Indianapolis Colts star would be a disaster for the Lions

Needs a team, but not the one in Detroit.

The Indianapolis Colts released cornerback Kenny Moore after he requested to be let go. The Detroit Lions unexpectedly need a new outside cornerback because of the concerns surrounding Terrion Arnold. Moore can't be Arnold's replacement, as much as some Lions fans might want that to be the case.

We aren't going to get too deep into the Arnold situation here. Simply put, he was waived by Detroit due to some extreme recent legal issues. He isn't going back to the Lions, but he was a good player, and not having him is a huge loss for the NFC North team.

Moore can't be the cornerback to take his spot, however. Not because Moore is a bad guy. He's a fine human being, and his addition in Detroit would at least help their culture. But the former Colts Pro Bowler doesn't have any positional flexibility. He is as pure a slot corner as there has been in the league for a few years.

Detroit Lions sadly don't need former Indianapolis Colts cornerback Kenny Moore

This is partly why he wasn't a great fit for Indianapolis either. Defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo doesn't need a slot corner on the field all that much, which is why Moore saw his starts fall from nearly 100 percent of the time between 2018 and 2024 to only half the time (literally; he started seven of the 14 games he played) in 2025, Anarumo's first season with the team.

Moore's snap percentage went from at least 92 percent of all defensive snaps from 2018 through 2024 to 76 percent last season. He was still a good player, but his specific position was devalued in Anarumo's scheme.

Terrion Arnold did get some snaps in the slot, but almost accidentally and by specific play designs. He spent most of his time outside, and Kenny Moore simply can't do that. He's never had to, and at nearly 31 years old, at 5'9" and 190 pounds, he isn't suddenly going to make the move to an outside spot.

The hope is that Moore does eventually find a team. He's earned that after being such a solid performer for the Indianapolis Colts (his Pro Bowl season came in 2021). Some fans might not like that he wanted off the team, at first requesting a trade that never materialized and then requesting to be released, but he wanted to finish his career where he was a good fit in the defensive scheme.

He wanted to help a team win at a high level, and he wanted to be an important part of that. Hopefully, the Colts win at a high level in 2026, of course, but that wasn't going to involve Kenny Moore to a great deal. He was simply a poor fit with the team now, and he won't be a good fit for the Detroit Lions either.
