Indianapolis Colts defensive coordinator, Matt Eberflus, will interview for head coaching positions.

On the heels of the Indianapolis Colts’ disappointing loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars, they may soon experience some turnover on the coaching staff.

Indy could lose its defensive coordinator, Matt Eberflus, to the head coaching market.

Eberflus has already agreed to interview for the Jaguars’ opening and today, the Chicago Bears requested to interview Eberflus for their recent head coaching vacancy.

This isn’t new territory for Eberflus, as he interviewed for three head coaching positions during the last cycle. The three teams last year were the Houston Texans, New York Jets, and Los Angeles Chargers.

All three teams went in different directions and Eberflus remained with Indianapolis.

Eberflus joined the Colts coaching staff in 2018 and originally signed on to be the defensive coordinator for Josh McDaniels. After the fiasco that resulted in McDaniels returning to New England, Eberflus remained with Indy to coach with Frank Reich.

Eberflus has been respected league-wide for his quick turnaround of Indianapolis’ defense. The season before Eberflus took over, the defense was ranked 30th in points and yardage allowed.

The first year under Eberflus’ coaching, Indy’s defense jumped to 10th in points allowed and 11th in yards. In total, in the four seasons that Eberflus has been the Colts defensive coordinator, Indianapolis has ranked 10th, 18th, 10th, and ninth in points allowed.

That type of turnaround and maintained consistency is the reason Eberflus is a respected target on the head coach market.

For now, Eberflus is just interviewing. He and any interested team will have to come to an official agreement before he is no longer the Colts defensive coordinator.

If that does occur, Indy will be tasked with finding a suitable replacement that can keep the defense adequately performing and possibly improving.
