Colts rookie running back Jordan Wilkins is getting some reps with the starters this offseason. How big of a role will he play in 2018?

The Colts’ running back situation has been one of the most fascinating stories to watch this offseason in Indianapolis.

The Colts decided to let Frank Gore walk in free agency after three years in Indianapolis, which opened up an opportunity for the team’s younger backs to earn a larger role in the offense.

Marlon Mack was expected to take the starting job in Gore’s absence, but the Colts also drafted two talented rookies in the fourth and fifth round to add to their stable of backs.

Mack has missed most of the team’s offseason activities as he recovers from surgery on a torn labrum that he dealt with during his rookie year.

In Mack’s absence, rookie Jordan Wilkins has been working with the starters this offseason according to George Bremer.

Wilkins was a role player during his first few years at Ole Miss and battled through some injuries, but he exploded for over 1,000 yards rushing at 6.5 yards per carry with 10 total touchdowns during his senior year.

He was also solid in the passing game with 26 receptions for 241 yards last season.

There is no clear lead back in Indianapolis with Marlon Mack on the sidelines.

New head coach Frank Reich has favored a running back by committee philosophy in his offenses during his coaching career, and he’s been vocal about continuing that with the Colts.

Regardless of whether Jordan Wilkins wins the starting job come September, he will surely get plenty of touches along with the other young players in Indianapolis’ backfield.

Wilkins’ reps with the first team will help him get ready for his first year as a pro.
