The Colts need to add some talent at running back this offseason after the departure of Frank Gore, so they’re taking a look at Damien Williams.
With Frank Gore moving on from Indianapolis, the Colts will be hoping for a breakout sophomore year from Marlon Mack. While Colts fans should have high expectations for Mack in 2018, there isn’t much talent behind him on the depth chart.
Robert Turbin is coming off of a season-ending injury, and I think he may be a candidate to get cut this offseason. Matt Jones and Josh Ferguson are the only other running backs on the roster, and neither of them are capable of giving Mack the help that he needs in Frank Reich’s running back by committee offense.
Damien Williams isn’t the most exciting running back either, but he could provide some balanced production to the Colts’ backfield. He rushed for 181 yards and caught 20 passes for 155 yards last season with the Dolphins.
Williams has had similar production in each of his four seasons in the NFL, and the Colts could expect him to put up those type of numbers again in 2018 if they decide to sign him. The 26-year-old could help take some of the rushing load off of Marlon Mack’s shoulders, and he could play consistently on third down with his ability in the passing game.

Even if the Colts sign Damien Williams after this visit, I’d expect them to continue to look for running back talent in free agency and in a draft class that is loaded with talent at that position.
