Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio is citing “increasing chatter” that Josh McDaniels will stay in New England next season and turn down the Colts head coaching job.

All of the reports during the Colts’ search for their next head coach have essentially described it is a done deal that Josh McDaniels will be roaming the sidelines in Indianapolis next season. However, the latest report from Mike Florio should strike fear in the hearts of Colts fans everywhere.

Because of the Patriots’ trip to the Super Bowl, the Colts have been unable to officially hire McDaniels until New England’s season is over.

Does this report raises questions about Bill Belichick’s future in New England? Maybe McDaniels received some concerning news about the health of Andrew Luck? All we can do is speculate at this point.

There’s no way to find out the legitimacy of this report without speaking to people in the Indianapolis front office or McDaniels himself. And there’s still a good chance that McDaniels will be introduced as the head coach next week in Indianapolis without a hitch.

But if McDaniels does decide to continue his tenure in New England, the Colts will be the last team left on the coaching carousel after all of the best candidates have been scooped up by other teams.

The only other available candidate that the Colts have already interviewed would be former Seahawks defensive coordinator Kris Richard. If this doomsday scenario does occur, Chris Ballard may have to start from scratch in his first head coaching hire as an NFL general manager.
