Kris Richard has developed into a head coaching candidate during his time with the Seahawks. Would he be a good candidate for the potential opening in Indianapolis?

Résumé

Kris Richard had a brief playing career in the NFL as a cornerback with Seattle for three seasons and another year with the 49ers.

Richard began his coaching career at his alma mater with two seasons as a graduate assistant under Pete Carroll at USC in 2008 and ’09. Richard followed Pete Carroll to Seattle where he worked his way up the Seahawks’ coaching staff.

Richard started his tenure as the assistant defensive backs coach in 2010. The next year he became the cornerbacks coach, then transitioned to the defensive backs coach job in 2012. After former Seahawks defensive coordinators Gus Bradley and Dan Quinn got head coaching jobs elsewhere, Richard was promoted to defensive coordinator in 2015.

It looks like Richard will follow in the footsteps of other former Seattle defensive coordinators very soon as he is creating a lot of positive buzz within NFL coaching circles.

Kris Richard’s Fit With the Colts

As we’ve discussed in many of these articles profiling potential head coaching candidates, the Colts should be looking for an experienced coach who will be ready to win right away.

While this roster certainly has some holes, it’s a good enough crop of players to be in playoff contention with a healthy Andrew Luck at quarterback.

At 38 years old, Indianapolis is probably not the perfect spot for Richard to make his debut as an NFL head coach.
