Multiple reports are indicating that the Colts have finally sealed the deal on the hiring of their next head coach as Josh McDaniels will officially take over after the Patriots play in the Super Bowl next week.

Last week’s news in the Colts search for their next head coach was that Indianapolis’ front office had scheduled a second interview with Josh McDaniels ahead of New England’s trip to Minnesota for the Super Bowl.

This second interview was essentially a planning period on how and when the Colts were going to introduce McDaniels to the fanbase as their new head coach.

ESPN’s Chris Mortensen added a wrinkle in his report that Colts owner Jim Irsay was in attendance for McDaniels’ second interview in New England along with general manager Chris Ballard. Mortensen went on to say that this was a normal step in the hiring process as most organizations need their owner to sign off on a deal of this importance.

Despite the curious situation regarding Matt Nagy’s interview with the Colts, Chris Ballard’s first coaching search as a general manager has been quite smooth.

He quickly identified what type of candidate he would like to be his new head coach, and then executed on that vision by bringing in a brilliant offensive mind to work with their franchise quarterback in Andrew Luck.

He even handled a potential hiccup in the hiring process after the Titans’ head coaching job opened up by locking McDaniels in before Tennessee could ever make a move.

I think the Colts have made a great hire in an offseason where there wasn’t an abundance of qualified head coaching candidates available.

The Josh McDaniels era will officially begin after Super Bowl Sunday.
