A new candidate has emerged for the Colts’ head coaching job as Indianapolis’ front office reportedly interviewed Baylor head coach Matt Rhule. Here’s all you need to know about Rhule, and whether he would be a good choice for the Colts.

Résumé

Matt Rhule has primarily worked in college football during his relatively young coaching career. Here’s a list of his assistant coaching jobs at the college level:

  • 1998: Linebackers coach at Albright
  • 1999-2000: Defensive line coach at Buffalo
  • 2001: Defensive line coach at UCLA
  • 2002-2005: Linebackers/offensive line/special teams coach, run game coordinator, and assistant head coach at Western Carolina
  • 2006-20011: Quarterbacks/tight ends coach, offensive coordinator at Temple

2012 was the first and only year Rhule coached in the NFL as he was the Giants’ offensive line coach.

He accepted the head coaching job at Temple in 2013. He went 2-10 in his first season there, but he finished his tenure with two consecutive 10-win seasons in 2015 and 2016.

Rhule went 1-11 in 2017 during his first year as the head coach at Baylor as he stepped into a situation that not many coaches would want to take on. Despite his poor record at Baylor, he has apparently done enough for general manager Chris Ballard to be interested in his prospects as an NFL head coach.

Matt Rhule’s Fit with the Colts

One impressive aspect of Rhule’s résumé is that he’s worked on both sides of the ball during his coaching career. However, he only has one season of experience in the NFL, and there wasn’t much buzz about him getting an NFL head coaching job before this interview.

I think Rhule can have success at Baylor in the future, but I’d like to see him do that before hiring him as the Colts’ next head coach.
