T.Y. Hilton Was a Top 5 Wideout Statistically Last Season

According to Football Outsiders Assistant Editor Scott Kacsmar, the Indianapolis Colts T.Y. Hilton was a Top 5 NFL wide receiver statistically last season. That is, according to his +/- for 2014, Hilton was the 4th best at wideout in the entire NFL:

It’s interesting because while ProFootballFocus (subscription) ranked Hilton as their 10th best wideout overall with a +12.0 grade, the +/- statistic provided by Kacsmar sheds more of a positive light on his play from last season:

For those unfamiliar with Football Outsiders +/- statistic, Kacsmar so graciously gave more information on the freshly created statistic:

Of course, it only reinforces what we already knew from last season, that T.Y. Hilton had a breakout season. The then 3rd-year pro caught 82 receptions for 1,345 receiving yards and 7 touchdowns. He solidified himself as the Colts #1 wideout and was Andrew Luck‘s go-to target throughout the season, making highlight reel plays in the process.

Such exceptional play was rewarded, as Hilton made his 1st career Pro Bowl appearance last year. Additionally, he earned considerable respect from his peers, as he was recently named #35 in the NFL’s Top 100.

The diminutive, yet dangerous wideout is clearly poised for another productive season for the Colts and should put up impressive receiving numbers yet again, maybe even Top 5 worthy. He’s clearly an elite playmaker in the team’s passing game going forward.
