Who is the most underrated player on the Colts?
The Indianapolis Colts have several players that get the recognition that they deserve. But who is the most underrated player on Indy’s roster?
Despite coming off a 4-12-1 season, the Indianapolis Colts have quite a few stars on the roster. Indy has Jonathan Taylor, who has a case to be the league’s best running back, Shaquille Leonard, arguably the best linebacker in football, and Quenton Nelson, one of the few notable offensive linemen in the NFL. There are also guys like DeForest Buckner and Kenny Moore II that get their credit.
The question is, who is Indianapolis’ most underrated player? The Colts certainly have some quality contributors that don't get the recognition they deserve, especially since the team is coming off an underwhelming season. So who is the most underrated?
According to William Moy of PFF, the answer is cornerback Isaiah Rodgers Sr. In a recent piece looking at the most underrated player from every team in the NFL, Moy highlighted Rodgers.
Isaiah Rodgers Sr. named Colts most underrated player
Moy pointed out that “Out of 106 cornerbacks who saw at least 250 coverage snaps in 2022, Rodgers ranked fifth in terms of coverage grade and third by allowing just 4.9 yards per time he was targeted in coverage.” Consistently solid cornerback play from someone that it seemed like Gus Bradley tried keeping off the field.
Once Rodgers started to receive a reasonable amount of snaps, it was clear that he was the second-best cornerback on the roster last season after Stephon Gilmore. Eventually, he got the starting role and began to show how good of a corner he could be. Now, Rodgers will have to lead a room of young cornerbacks.
With Dallis Flowers returning for his second season, and the Colts selecting three cornerbacks in the draft, Indy’s corner room will be really young. Rodgers is one of the presumed starters, but depending on how quickly the young guys adjust, everyone could get some reps.
As far as being the most underrated player on the Colts, Rodgers certainly has a case. However, it’s hard to deny that Grover Stewart deserves that title. Stewart turned into one of the more dominant defensive tackles in the NFL last season, and he didn’t get much love for it from people outside of Indy’s fan base. He’s even more underrated than Isaiah Rodgers Sr.
