Despite the improvements the Indianapolis Colts made this offseason, they are considered one of the worst rosters in the NFL heading into the 2023 season.

This time last year, several people believed the Indianapolis Colts had one of the better rosters in all of football. Indy was coming off a season where they had a league-high seven Pro Bowlers, and many more talented players. Now, a year later, despite having many of those same players on the roster, the Colts are viewed as one of the worst rosters in all of football.

In a recent ESPN piece by Mike Clay and Seth Walder, ranking all 32 teams by roster, the Colts were considered one of the worst rosters in the NFL, being ranked No. 30. The only two teams that Clay and Walder considered to be worse than Indy were the Los Angeles Rams and the Arizona Cardinals.

Colts roster ranked 30th in NFL

Along with the ranking, Clay and Walder answered four questions: strongest unit, weakest unit, an X-factor, and a nonstarter to know. The strongest unit was the defensive tackle group, led by DeForest Buckner, and the weakest unit was the extremely young secondary.

Walder argued that Indy’s x-factor for 2023 was decorated left guard Quenton Nelson. Walder explained that although Nelson’s resume makes him seem like a dependable superstar, there are a lot of questions surrounding him after last season. The offensive line needs to improve and Nelson must lead that charge by returning to the dominant force he is.

The nonstarter to know was surprisingly Deon Jackson. Walder said that Jackson could be a threat as a receiving option out of the backfield in 2023.

While Clay and Walder’s assessments of the four categories were fair, it’s hard to accept that Indy is actually the 30th best roster in the league. The Colts have an argument to have the second-best roster in the AFC South, but still, the Houston Texans and Tennessee Titans were ranked ahead of them. Ultimately, Indy will have to prove itself on the field.
