Where do Colts and AFC South rank amongst NFL divisions after free agency moves?

The NFL has already seen a ton of moves in free agency. How do the Indianapolis Colts and the AFC South compare to the league after these moves?

When the NFL season ended, many people considered the AFC South the worst division in football. The Houston Texans had the second-worst record in the league at 3-12-1 and the Indianapolis Colts had the fourth-worst record at 4-12-1. The two best teams in the AFC South that competed for the division championship were the 7-10 Tennessee Titans and the 9-8 Jacksonville Jaguars. It was definitely a struggle for the AFC South as a whole.

Now that free agency has arrived, teams can improve the quality of their roster and change their fate. So how has the AFC South been doing now that the league is over a week into free agency? Obviously no games are being played but are they still considered the worst division in the league?

David Kenyon answered this in a recent piece for Bleacher Report. After the first week of free agency, Kenyon ranked all of the league’s divisions. Unfortunately for the AFC South, they are still ranked last at No. 8.

AFC South ranked as worst division in the NFL

Kenyon highlighted that the Jaguars are in a good position to remain at the top of the division, however, “the collective uncertainty” at quarterback for the other three teams is pulling the division down. With the Texans and the Colts both likely selecting quarterbacks at the top of the draft, Kenyon hopes the young QBs could get this division turned around.

The Colts will be hoping that their young quarterback, and first-year head coach Shane Steichen, can lead lead the team to their first AFC South title since 2014. Since then, the Texans have won the division four times, the Titans twice, and the Jaguars twice as well. Things are relatively wide open though.

Jacksonville will surely be the favorite, but just a year ago, no one was giving the Jaguars a chance to finish second in the division, let alone win it. Indianapolis is hoping for that kind of jump next season. With the right moves over the next few months, the Colts have a chance to be the best team in the league’s worst division.
