General manager Chris Ballard said this past offseason that he wanted to reshape the Indianapolis Colts' front seven on defense to make it more athletic and younger. He did that to a degree, but maybe not overall. One spot that is definitely going to be younger is slot corner, though.
The player who held that position for nearly a decade is gone. Kenny Moore, a one-time Pro Bowler, first asked to be traded, but as no takers emerged, he then asked to be released. The team granted him his wish.
Now, in place of Moore, will likely be second-year pro Justin Walley. The younger cornerback was taken in the third round of the 2025 draft out of Minnesota, and he impressed in training camp last year. That was before he tore his ACL, which forced him to miss the entire season.
Justin Walley is ready to help reshape the Indianapolis Colts defense
The belief is that Walley is now fully recovered and ready to produce. In defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo's scheme, nickelback is somewhat devalued, just as the inside linebacker duo is. Walley, assuming he gets the job, won't get as many reps as Moore once did, but Moore's snap percentage fell below 90 percent for the first time since 2017.
That implies that Walley won't be as important to the overall scheme as Moore was required to be between 2018 and 2024, but what matters is that Walley should add an element of speed to the reps he gets over what Moore was currently capable of. While the Colts suffered numerous injuries last season, limiting the effectiveness of the defense, the unit also lacked high-end speed.
As the Seattle Seahawks and Houston Texans proved last season with elite defenses, speed is a must to have success in the current landscape of the league. The Colts defense ranked in the bottom half of the league in many metrics, but those numbers could change quite quickly in 2026 due to having younger and more athletic players such as Walley and linebacker CJ Allen.
Assuming (though not safely, mind you) that key players like Sauce Gardner, Charvarius Ward, and DeForest Buckner stay healthier this season, the defense is going to be better. Having faster players such as Justin Walley is only going to augment the chances of an improved defense.
If that side of the ball is better and quarterback Daniel Jones doesn't get hurt again, the Indianapolis Colts will be a better team overall. Even with many talented players getting hurt in 2025, the team was in the hunt for the playoffs almost until the end. With good health and more speed, Indy should be back in the postseason again.
