New Bears running back gets fresh start after wasted Colts opportunity

Maybe he'll find success.

The Indianapolis Colts lost a running back in free agency this week, who the team was not going to make much of a significant move to re-sign. Salvon Ahmed is now a member of the Chicago Bears and will need to prove he is worthy of a spot on the 53-man roster.

Ahmed never had much of a chance to do that in Indy. He was signed to the practice squad in October 2024 after spending his first four seasons with the Miami Dolphins. He went undrafted out of the University of Washington in 2020.

Last year in Colts training camp, Ahmed was running the ball when a teammate used the outlawed hip drop tackle to try to take the running back down. In doing so, Ahmed suffered a gruesome ankle injury that cost him his season. Thankfully, it didn't cost him his career.

The running back's best season came as a rookie when he appeared in six games, but did start four of them, had 319 yards rushing, including 122 against the New England Patriots in Week 15. All Colts fans can get behind any player who helped beat the evil team from the Boston area. It's just too bad that Ahmed was unable to do so with Indianapolis.

At best, he would have been battling for an RB3 spot in Indy. The starter is obviously going to be Jonathan Taylor, who is seemingly trending toward having a Hall of Fame career. DJ Giddens is Taylor's likely backup, and rookie Seth McGowan might have the edge for what could be the final running back spot on the roster.

With the Chicago Bears, Salvon Ahmed might have a better chance of hanging onto the bottom of the depth chart. D'Andre Swift will start, and RB2 will be Kyle Monangai, who quietly ran for nearly 800 yards last season. After those two, the depth chart is relatively thin.

Ahem will need to battle, of course, but Indianapolis Colts fans might be pulling for him to at least make the Bears' roster after the running back had no chance to do so after a teammate illegally tackled him in practice, and Ahmed lost a year of his football life.

The Bears and Colts don't play each other this coming season. If Salvon Ahmed did want to have his revenge against Indianapolis, he couldn't. Not unless the teams meet in the Super Bowl, which would probably be fine with all parties involved.
