Salvon Ahmed might have had issues making the Indianapolis Colts roster in 2025 as is, but after injuring his leg on Sunday, it appears he will not have a chance. In fact, there is a decent chance the injury could end Ahmed's career.
The running back played four years for the Miami Dolphins and earned playing time. But he had no home in 2024, and the Colts signed him to the practice squad. He was buried on the depth chart in training camp, but there was still time to make up ground and prove he belongs.
After all, Ahmed played in 38 games and had 163 carries and 40 catches for the Dolphins from 2020 to 2023. That is more than enough experience to have possibly given him the upper hand over young players. Maybe.
Indianapolis Colts running back Salvon Ahmed carted off after injuring his leg in training camp
The running back was injured near the end of Sunday's Colts practice after being tackled by Trey Washington and was carted off. Ahmed immediately screamed in pain after being tackled. That, obviously, is never a good sign. Practice was stopped for a short time after Ahmed was hurt.
The injury also appears to have been caused by a poorly executed hip-drop tackle. The move was outlawed by the NFL this offseason. Ahmed getting hurt is a good example of why.
Even worse, after practice, Colts head coach Shane Steichen said his "thoughts and prayers" were with the running back. That, of course, is not a good sign either.
The problem is that Salvon Ahmed is like many of us. He wasn't going to be a star on any team he played with, but he could have been the kind of glue guy Indy needed. He just wants to do what he loves for a living, and that means playing football. If we had something taken from us via injury, doing something we loved, that would be rough. We can empathize.
After being signed by the San Francisco 49ers as an undrafted free agent in 2020, but released and then signed by the Miami Dolphins. After only being on the Indianapolis Colts' practice squad in 2024 and then suffering a likely season-ending leg injury, the chances of another team taking a chance on Ahmed are slim. Maybe he will have a quicker-than-expected recovery.
