Colts might have had immediate fix to the defense just fall into their lap

Just in time too.

The Indianapolis Colts need to make some tweaks this offseason. A general manager and head coach move didn't happen, which inherently means the team is likely to run back everything it tried in the first half of the 2025 season. That was, obviously, when the team was at its best.

Still, thinking that the team could do everything it did when the team was humming would be a mistake. Even the 8-2 record was somewhat of a lie. Indianapolis faced a fairly weak schedule and took advantage of it. When the teams got tougher, Indy had a more difficult time competing.

Injuries hurt, sure, but other teams had the same problems and did fine. The San Francisco 49ers, for instance, lost far more than the Colts did over the course of the season and made the postseason. Indy didn't.

Indianapolis Colts should take a long look at recently released Bradley Chubb

But one area of concern might have just been given a gift. Besides Laiatu Latu, no Indianapolis edge rusher was consistently good. Even Latu was a bit up and down, but maybe because he simply needed some help. That could come in the form of Bradley Chubb.

The Miami Dolphins released the edge rusher among a rash of moves on Monday. Letting Chubb leave saves Miami $20 million in cap room, and his release was far from surprising. He had a $31 million cap hit in 2026. He's a good player, but he's not that good.

He is the exact kind of player that the Colts could use, however. The soon-to-be 30-year-old had 8.5 sacks in 2025 after missing all of the 2024 season with a torn ACL. He had 11 sacks in 2023. His 48 total pressures would have ranked second on Indy after Latu's 61 total pressures. His number of sacks would have tied for the team lead with Latu.

Bradley has always struggled in his tackle attempts, however. He missed a ridiculous 30.4 percent in 2025, but that isn't that far off his career total of 22.5. He also isn't great in pass coverage, but he should be asked by Colts defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo to do that as much in Indianapolis as the silly Miami team did.

Will Bradley Chubb make a bunch of money now that he is a free agent? Likely. But his age and 2024 injury history might hurt him. He also isn't fantastic against the run. Still, the Indianapolis Colts need players who can chase down quarterbacks, and Chubb can absolutely do that. He would instantly make Indy's defense better.
