To be fair, the Jacksonville Jaguars have gotten the better of the Indianapolis Colts recently. But historically? Not so much. Indy has been the far better organization, and the Jags' lows are really low. Urban Meyer, anyone? What a mess that was.
Heck, Jacksonville also had a habit of whiffing on quarterbacks. Again, historically. Sure, Anthony Richardson is still a work in progress who Colts fans hope finally proves his draft status this year. Jacksonville has been waiting for Trevor Lawrence to be something akin to Andrew Luck or Peyton Manning for four years now.
Yet, the quarterback and his team only have a 22-38 record in that span. Lawrence's 85.0 quarterback rating is very low compared to current NFL standards.
Indianapolis Colts fans get to have another chuckle at the Jacksonville Jaguars
But at least Lawrence wants to play for the Jaguars, one would assume. They pay him well enough. Wide receiver Lous Rees-Zammit, though? He would rather leave than take a chance on making the Jags' roster.
Rees-Zammit was (is?) a former rugby player who decided to try his hand at American football. He was part of the International Pathway Program in January 2024 when he signed with the Kansas City Chiefs. Rees-Zammit likely thought he had found gold by signing with the perennial Super Bowl contender.
But Super Bowl contenders often have loaded rosters, and the Chiefs had no real spot for the former rugby player to call home. KC released him when final roster cuts were made last season, and Jacksonville signed him to their practice squad. That way, Rees-Zammit could sit and learn and watch how American football is practiced and played.
One season of watching the mess that are the Jaguars must have been enough. This week, Rees-Zammit decided to retire from the NFL and go back to playing rugby. Mind you, he is only 24 years old, and could have hung around the league for a few more years.
I’ve got an exciting announcement to make! I’ve decided to leave the NFL and return to rugby!

This means that what he witnessed and experienced with the Jacksonville Jaguars wasn't just enough for Rees-Zammit to say the heck with Jacksonville, but the entire thought that he wanted to try to become a football player. The Jags must have made quite the impression on him.
Maybe he had an outside chance of making the active roster. That isn't really the point. He spent a year on the practice squad, and he might have done the same again. He obviously didn't want to be in Jacksonville. And all Indianapolis Colts fans can probably get the logic in Louis Rees-Zammit's thinking.
