JuJu Brents was drafted in the second round of the 2023 NFL draft by the Indianapolis Colts. That draft increasingly looks like a waste for the team. First-round pick Anthony Richardson hasn't yet worked out, and Brents, after two injury-riddled seasons, was released as part of roster cuts in 2025.
But Indy won't have to wait long to see his former team. According to MMQB's Albert Breer, Brents was claimed off waivers by the Miami Dolphins. The Dolphins are the Colts' Week 1 opponent this coming season. Will Brents play? Likely.
He missed a lot of time (of course) in Indy's training camp and preseason because he was dealing with a hamstring injury. There is nothing to make a player healthier than losing their job. Maybe Indianapolis was hoping he would clear waivers and the team could sign him to their practice squad. That didn't happen.
Why did the Dolphins sign former Colts cornerback JuJu Brents?
Instead, Brents goes to a team that has a mess in the secondary. Miami has seen its own share of injuries in the secondary. The Dolphins also traded Pro Bowl cornerback Jalen Ramsey to the Pittsburgh Steelers this offseason, and that opened up more space that didn't need to be opened.
Another thing that gets a player healthier more quickly is the opportunity to play the team that gave up on you. The Indianapolis Colts had every right to do so with JuJu Brents, of course. He has appeared in just 11 games in two seasons, and he hasn't been particularly good when he has played.
The cornerback's career passer rating allowed is a bad 100.5, and he has allowed 65.5 percent of his targets to be completed. He also has whiffed on more than 10 percent of his tackle attempts.
Week 1 could go many ways for the Colts and Dolphins. Brents plays, and Indianapolis knows his weaknesses and quarterback Daniel Jones is able to take advantage of him. Or Brents misses it because he is hurt. Or he plays but isn't good because he hasn't been in the NFL yet.
