The Indianapolis Colts shrank their roster from 90 to 53 on Tuesday, and we can now get our first look at the practice squad. With only two spots remaining, it’s not totally complete, but most of it is. We should see the final three spots get filled in rather quickly, but most often, some players are weighing all their options.
One remaining spot that might get filled in the next 24 hours could be the return of rookie Tim Smith. He was waived on Wednesday to make room for the only (reportedly) waiver claim in this cycle. The Colts placed a claim on now-former Jaguars linebacker Chad Muma. He is not expected to step in and play right away, but they do need rotational pieces, and it sounds like Muma needed a clean slate.
One unique aspect to this year’s practice squad so far is the amount of returning players. In fact, every single player so far on the squad is returning from the 90-man roster. They did not sign anyone from another team’s roster cuts. I think that speaks of the belief in what is being built, especially on the defensive side of the ball.

As mentioned above, Tim Smith was waived today, and I will expect him to return if he clears waivers. Some notable players that we did not see on the practice squad include CB Alex Johnson, Center Wesley French, and DE Isaiah Land.
Inversely, we saw some notable names that found new homes from the offseason roster. Those include JuJu Brents (Miami), Sam Womack (Tennessee), and Jelani Woods (New York Jets). JuJu Brents will get his revenge game in Week 1 against Indianapolis, and Womack will get to see us twice for division games.
Chris Ballard said to expect the team to bring in more players for workouts over the next 10 days, so this practice squad will continue to be fluid now and for the remainder of the season.
