As the Indianapolis Colts continue to grapple with their quarterback issue, rumors have swirled over who they might consider signing - whether it's a veteran free agent QB, or a rookie from the draft. Either way, while Anthony Richardson is still QB1 for the moment, the Colts have openly said they plan to seek out competition at quarterback.

Initially, there was some talk of Matt Stafford being available, which would have been a good option for the Colts, considering he's one of the best quarterbacks in the league right now. Stafford, however, will be staying in Los Angeles with the Rams after all, and he was more of a pipe dream, anyway. And while it initially seemed unlikely that the Colts would opt for a quarterback, shocking news emerged Friday: the Colts, apparently, are eying Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers.

Ewers could be a good candidate for another team, but for Indianapolis, he seems to be an odd choice. According to his NFL.com draft profile, Ewers has a lot of talent and potential, but struggles with consistency. Sound like anyone Colts fans already know?

For the draft, Ewers could be a good mid-round pick, and might end up as a strong backup QB; he will have a tough time fighting off the top options in his draft class (Cam Ward, Jalen Milroe, and Shedeur Sanders). The Colts are definitely in need of a backup quarterback, as Joe Flacco is not expected to remain in Indianapolis. But as has already been said, Ewers doesn't seem to fit what the Colts need; they want a backup QB who can potentially compete with Richardson. Ewers would essentially be a repeat of Richardson, but with less experience. Given how close Richardson already is to QB3 Sam Ehlinger, it seems that even Ehlinger would be a better option as a backup to Richardson than Ewers would be. That the Colts are seriously considering drafting a quarterback, particularly one like Ewers, as opposed to focusing on one of their multiple other needs is a troubling sign for 2025.
