It’s obvious this is a continued area of need

Death. Taxes. The Colts losing in Jacksonville. The Colts lost another in Jacksonville by the final score of 37-34 as they extended their losing to 10 games in their building. They are now winless in Jacksonville since 2014.

The offensive performance and game plan was good enough to win but the defense was again, simply, not good enough. The secondary was poor allowing the best outing of the season for Trevor Lawrence. Fans thought the run defense was starting to hit its stride, but we saw Jaguars backup running back Tank Bigsby have his best performance of the year.

The secondary continues to be an issue that needs attention.

Why The Colts Need Help In The Secondary

While you can simply watch this team play to know this team needs help in the secondary. They are depleted by injury, but Colts GM Chris Ballard has yet to make a big name splash to help out. The Colts are on pace for a historically bad defensive season as they are currently averaging approximately 262 yards allowed per game in the air.

The scheme that Gus Bradley continues to employ has not worked as they are also on pace to have another dubious year of points allowed. They have finished at the bottom of the league for every year of Gus Bradley’s tenure. The need for a playmaker and depth in the secondary has never been more evident.

Benjamin Morrison-CB/Notre Dame

When picking towards the middle of the first round, you rarely get the best player at a position, but you can get some serious value. Morrison is not the best cornerback on the board, but he would be the best available. Colorado CB/WR Travis Hunter and Michigan CB Will Johnson are the unquestioned two top players at this position for the 2025 NFL Draft. Morrison is the son of former NFL player, Daryl Morrison.

With the Colts releasing Dallis Flowers on Monday and the continued injuries and overall inexperience the best move is for the franchise is to bring in more veteran presence. However, when drafting this early it’s a mixture of the now and the future. Morrison has not only played at high level college football, but he has excelled at it.

A bit undersized for his position but he makes up for it with his high football IQ and elite coverage skills. He can play both man and zone coverage and has been coached by what many consider to be an elite college coordinator in Al Golden. Most draft picks will need time to adapt to the NFL style of play, but Morrison (with time) can be a starter in this league.

The current zone schemes the Colts run have come into question and whether Gus Bradley returns, Morrison could be a key piece for the new coordinator that would likely change the scheme to a man coverage.

Bringing in another veteran and Morrison to pair with Jaylon Jones and JuJu Brents would help solve the depth problems the Colts have had this year with Brents and Kenny Moore both missing time this year. If this year has taught the fanbase anything, it’s that depth is king, and they have a backup plan to enact when the inevitable injuries occur.
