The Indianapolis Colts don't have the best situation when it comes to their quarterback room. After spending the fourth overall pick on Anthony Richardson two years ago, the Colts signed former Giants first-round bust Daniel Jones and the two are going to duke it out for the right to be the starting quarterback in Indianapolis this year.
One would think that, with the Colts picking 14th, taking a quarterback in the first round is off the table. Shedeur Sanders could fall to them, as could Jackson Dart, but the expectation, especially after GM Chris Ballard's comments earlier this week, is that the team will take a tight end with their first-round selection.
That being said, Ballard left the door open when it comes to Indianapolis potentially adding a quarterback early on in the draft.
“I think every year –- I mean, like you don't ever want to pass up a player you think has got a chance to be really good," Ballard said. "I think you can say it for every position, but especially at quarterback... If there’s a player that we deem worthy of [drafting in the first or second round], absolutely. Why wouldn’t we?”
Colts fans apparently aren’t done riding QB rollercoaster
Ballard and the Colts were hoping that Richardson would solve their years-long issue of struggling to find a starting quarterback. After Andrew Luck suddenly retired in 2019, the Colts have had 10 different starting quarterbacks and it certainly feels like karma after having Peyton Manning and Luck as the starters for so long.
Richardson showed promise during his rookie season but unfortunately, a shoulder injury cut that campaign short. In 2024, he had moments where he looked phenomenal but then there were plenty of less-than-stellar moments to erase those good ones.
The hope is that bringing Jones in to compete with Richardson will fire him up and motivate him. That being said, Ballard might not be bluffing about bringing in a third option to compete with Richardson and Jones.
While landing Sanders or Dart probably isn't going to happen, would it shock Colts fans to see Ballard and the team target a signal-caller in the second round? Guys like Quinn Ewers and Tyler Shough will likely still be on the board then and could make a lot of sense for Indianapolis. We'll have to see how things play out for the Colts and if they end up adding a quarterback in the first couple of rounds.
