The Indianapolis Colts might not be an active participant in Super Bowl LX festivities this week. They are, however, the answer to a good Super Bowl week trivia question.

The Colts’ postseason drought stands at five seasons without a playoff appearance after an 8-9 finish to the 2025 season. It’s been 16 seasons since the franchise’s last trip to the Super Bowl. That Super Bowl took place in Miami. That’s your hint for our Colts-themed Super Bowl trivia question.

The question: What is the only NFL franchise with multiple Super Bowl appearances that played all of its Super Bowl games in the same city?

The Indianapolis Colts and a super common thread

The answer: The Colts.

Counting two appearances as the Baltimore Colts, the franchise has played in four Super Bowls – after the 1968, 1970, 2006, and 2009 seasons. All four Super Bowls involving the Colts took place in Miami.

No other franchise with multiple Super Bowl appearances can say it played all of its Super Bowl games in the same city.

Super Bowl III in the Orange Bowl after the 1968 season is one of the most famous football games of all time. Joe Namath guaranteed victory for his upstart New York Jets. He delivered a 16-7 win against the heavily favored Colts.

Super Bowl V, after the 1970 season, also held in the Orange Bowl, became known as the “Blooper Bowl.” The Colts somehow beat the Dallas Cowboys by a 16-13 score despite committing seven turnovers.

Indianapolis fans fondly remember Super Bowl XLI after the 2006 season. The Colts beat the Chicago Bears 29-17 on a rainy night in Dolphin Stadium (the old name for Hard Rock Stadium) for the franchise’s only title since moving to Indianapolis.

Colts fans have considerably less fond memories of Super Bowl XLIV in the same building after the 2009 season. Indianapolis was favored, but lost 31-17 against the New Orleans Saints.

(The Miami connection apparently extends to multiple teams in the state of Indiana. The site of the Indiana Hoosiers’ recent triumph in the College Football Playoff championship game? None other than Miami.)

If the Colts are somehow predestined to play all of their Super Bowls in Miami, then the team won’t make it back to the big game in either of the next two seasons. The next two Super Bowls are scheduled for Los Angeles, followed by Atlanta. The NFL has not announced any Super Bowl sites beyond the 2027 season.

Superstitious Indianapolis fans can take heart. Miami has hosted the Super Bowl 11 times, tied with New Orleans for the most frequent Super Bowl host city. South Florida has not hosted the title game since 2020. History points to the NFL awarding a Super Bowl to Miami sometime in the next selection cycle. And history points to the Colts as a likely participant when the big game returns to Miami.
