The Indianapolis Colts might have rewarded Daniel Jones with a two-year deal this offseason, but there's an out in the contract if things go awry in 2026. If that does end up happening, which hopefully it doesn't, which quarterback could be next to take over the Colts' offense in 2027?
Josh Crysler of The Pewter Plank wrote that Baker Mayfield could be an option for Indy. That is assuming, of course, that Mayfield and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers fail to come to an agreement on a new deal. Mayfield is entering the final year of his three-year contract with the Bucs, and, as of now, the two appear to be far apart on agreements on a new deal.
That could be good news for the Colts if they do need a different quarterback when the 2027 offseason commences.
Indianapolis Colts make sense as a potential suitor for Baker Mayfield if Bucs can't get a deal done
Crysler talked about how Mayfield and Jones had similar-ish starts to their career, initially struggling with bad teams, moving on to play elsewhere, and then finding their footing with a new team. He said what's obvious, though in that Mayfield is ultimately the better option at the position, something that Colts fans probably wouldn't argue with.
"But Mayfield has been a better, more consistent quarterback than Jones throughout their careers. If the Colts QB has a down year, Indianapolis could be an attractive landing spot for Mayfield. They’re home to offensive guru head coach Shane Steichen, and have some capable pieces on offense, including Jonathan Taylor, Alec Pierce, and Tyler Warren."
It's true that Indianapolis would likely be an appealing destination for Mayfield if he doesn't stay in Tampa. Not only would he have the aforementioned weapons touched on by Crysler in the blurb above, but he'd go to another winnable division in the AFC South. It makes a lot of sense when you think about it.

Hopefully, Jones plays well in Year 2 with the Colts, and we don't have to even think about this as an option for next year. But, given Jones' track record in the league, it's a possibility we have to chew on. If things go south between Mayfield and the Bucs and the Colts find that Jones isn't the guy they're hoping he is at quarterback, this is an option they'd have to strongly consider.
Mayfield is a proven winner, turning the Buccaneers into contenders since arriving there in 2023. He's also durable and brings a fiery personality to the position, something Colts fans haven't seen in quite some time. If the former number one overall pick is available next offseason and Indy needs a quarterback, a pairing between the two could make a ton of sense.
