Anthony Richardson leads the Indianapolis Colts to victory over the New York Jets
After a brutal first half, the Jets were looking to reinvigorate their offense and eke out a win. Though the Colts struggled, they ultimately were able to squeeze out a win with Anthony Richardson at the helm.
The Colts received the ball to start the second half, and Richardson was almost immediately sacked by Jamien Sherwood; that caused Richardson to fumble the ball, which was recovered by Javon Kinlaw. Kinlaw was tackled by none other than Richardson himself, but it was a stark difference from the performance we saw from the Colts in the first half. Worse, the Jets took advantage of that turnover and sent Breece Hall to run it in for a touchdown. The Jets then took the lead, 14 - 13.
That entire process - the turnover, the recovery, and the touchdown - took less than two minutes, and the Colts offense were back on the field very quickly. Jonathan Taylor started the drive with a run for a loss of three yards, and Richardson went to throw, but the pass was deflected at the line of scrimmage, making it third and long. The offensive line made sure Richardson had time, and he managed to get a completion to Josh Downs for the first down. They handed it off to Taylor again, and he was stuffed, for another loss of yards. To make matters worse, Braden Smith gave the Colts their first penalty of the game, making it second and 18. Taylor ran the ball again, this time for a gain of 10, and Richardson was facing third and nine. Again, Richardson connected with Downs for another first down.
Richardson followed that up with another throw to Alec Pierce, for 16 yards and a quick first down, which brought them into Jets territory. Richardson came under pressure again; he was able to avoid the sack, but was forced to throw the ball away. At second and 10, Taylor ran for one yard, and Richardson was facing another third down. Head coach Shane Steichen elected to have Taylor run it again. This went nowhere, and kicker Matt Gay came out - a dangerous choice, as he has had some accuracy issues throughout the season, and this would be a season-long 56 yard field goal. Thankfully, Gay managed to get it through the uprights, and the Colts regained the lead.
Aaron Rodgers came back on the field, and they went three-and-out, with Jaylon Jones blocking a pass on third down, leaving Rodgers and Davante Adams clearly frustrated. The Jets were forced to punt, and the Colts offense got the ball back quickly.
A botched handoff between Richardson and Taylor put a quick end to that drive, and the Jets got the ball back with very goo field position, partly due to a questionable penalty call against Ashton Dulin. Rodgers botched their opportunity, though, as the Colts went three-and-out again. They opted for a field goal, and the Jets took the lead again.
With the Colts offense back on the field, Taylor ran the ball and gained five yards, but a holding penalty set them back 10 yards on second down. Michael Pittman, Jr., caught the ball but couldn't get anywhere, and a toss on third down from Richardson to Taylor got nowhere near enough yards, and the Colts went three and out.
The Jets offense at this point was seemingly revitalized, and at the end of the third quarter, were still leading by one. The inability to perform that plagued them in the first half was seemingly gone, as they quickly drove down the field. They got their first penalty of the game for a false start, but they still managed to make their way into the end zone, and score a touchdown, widening their lead to 24 - 16.
Richardson was immediately pressured, though he was not able to be brought down. He threw the ball away, and on second down, connected with Pittman for a gain of 20. Their next play was broken up, but another pass to Pittman got them to third and two while Richardson appeared to be hurt. Still, he stayed on the field, and threw to Mo Alie-Cox for another first down, and then had yet another deep pass to Pierce for a first down in the end zone. Taylor got the ball next, but gained just one yard. Richardson finished with a pass to Josh Downs for a touchdown, and Steichen kept the offense on the field to go for an extra point to tie it up. Unfortunately, Richardson overthrew slightly in a pass intended for Alie-Cox, and they couldn't get the extra point. Still, the deficit was lowered to two.
With 10 minutes left, Rodgers came back on the field, but his pass was shut down by rookie Laiatu Latu for a loss. They recovered and got two back-to-back first downs. The second one, a 13-yard run, was erased by a holding penalty, and it was taken back. Under pressure, Rodgers was barely able to connect and make it third and four. Another pass from Rodgers made it past heavy coverage from the Colts defense for another first down. A 19-yard pass to Davante Adams brought them further into Colts territory, and another first down. On second down, pressure forced Rodgers to throw it away, and they were at third and 10. A screen ended up short, and the Jets decided to go for it on fourth and 2. A timeout was called at the last second, and went for a field goal instead, making it a five-point game.
The Colts got the ball back with all three timeouts remaining, and just over two minutes left in the game. At 27 - 22, the Colts needed a touchdown to win. Richardson started the drive running for three yards. A deep shot to Pierce was successful, getting the Colts into Jets territory. Richardson had another successful pass to Downs, then Pittman, before running it in himself for a touchdown- again mowing over several members of the Jets' defense. Steichen decided to try for another two-point conversion, which was unsuccessful, but the touchdown was enough to put them up by one point, and put the Jets on the field with no timeouts and less than a minute to go.
Rodgers, however, couldn't find his momentum again, and started the drive with a backwards fumble, and then, in the last play of the game, was sacked by Kwity Paye. With that, the Colts' losing streak came to an end with a good performance from Richardson.
Richardson ended the game with a respectable 20 completions out of 30 attempts for 272 yards, plus another 32 yards rushing. The Colts will face the Detroit Lions next week, in what will surely be a much more difficult opponent to defeat.
