Anthony Richardson and the Indianapolis Colts dominate the New York Jets in the first half
The Indianapolis Colts headed to New Jersey to take on the New York Jets, with young quarterback Anthony Richardson back on the field after being benched for two weeks. The Colts are coming off of a three-game losing streak, while the Jets have lost the last two in a row.
Though the Colts have a slightly better record, analysts are split on who is favored to win. Most of the team is healthy, though they're without offensive lineman Bernhard Raimann, who is out with a knee injury. Colts fans have largely been excited to see Richardson back on the field, hoping it could pull the team out of their slump.
The Jets received the ball first, and quickly went three-and-out, punting the ball to the Colts. Richardson started with a run that unfortunately went nowhere, and he then handed the ball off to Jonathan Taylor, who gained just two yards. Yet he then threw a 31-yard stunner to Josh Downs to bring the Colts to a first down. Taylor then ran the next two plays, getting the Colts to the 30 yard line. They managed to drive a little further, but on third down, Richardson overthrew slightly to Kylen Granson, who got his hand on it, but ultimately couldn't bring it in. Matt Gay came out on the field and put the Colts on the board with a field goal.
Stunningly, Aaron Rodgers threw a completion that was immediately dropped, and then recovered by Nick Cross who ran it in for a touchdown. The referees, unfortunately, overruled that and claimed it was an incompletion instead, keeping the Jets on the field. On third down, Rodgers threw a bomb... but it went directly in the direction of Jaylon Jones, who nearly intercepted it, rather than any of his receivers. With that, the Jets went three-and-out yet again.
The Colts again started with Richardson running, this time for a gain of four. He lobbed the ball to Taylor in a quick release to avoid being sacked, and though Taylor bobbled it a little, he managed to hold onto it for a gain of three yards, bringing it to 3rd and 3. Head coach Shane Steichen then opted for Taylor to run again, but he couldn't manage to get any momentum going, and the Colts had to punt it away.
The Jets continued their streak of three-and-outs, this time with quarterback Aaron Rodgers sacked by rookie Laiatu Latu. Richardson and the offense came back on the field; he connected with Mo Alie-Cox on his first play, and then ran it in for a first down.
On third down, Richardson threw to Adonai Mitchell, who caught it and then broke a tackle to run almost all the way for a touchdown; he tried to reach the ball in, but just barely missed out. Either way, Mitchell got the Colts to the one yard line. After Taylor didn't gain any yards, on second down Richardson managed to run it in, literally mowing down two Jets defenders in his way. That put the Colts up 10-0
The Jets once again couldn't fail to get their offense moving, even with Aaron Rodgers running it in on third down just short of a first down. They opted to go for it on 4th down and 1, but the Colts defense shut them down and recovered the ball on the Jets' 39 yard line, giving them incredible field position.
This time, the Colts managed to go three-and-out for the first time in the game, but on fourth down, Steichen opted to go for it rather than try for a field goal, despite being in field goal position. Taylor, thankfully, got the first down easily. Richardson managed to get another first down with a completion to Drew Ogletree, and they steadily moved closer to the end zone. Despite a good drive, Richardson was taken down for a 16 yard loss in a sack; he originally shook off Quincy Williams, but his brother - Quinnen Williams - ran in to finish off the job. The Colts then sent out Gay for a field goal, extending their lead to 13.
With less than three minutes to go in the first half, the Jets again went three-and-out... meaning that they still had yet to gain a single first down.
When the Colts offense came back on the field, Taylor ran on the first play but had a loss of yards; Richardson lobbed a bomb towards Michael Pittman, Jr., but Pittman wasn't able to catch it. At third and long, Richardson scrambled in for three yards, and as the Jets went in to tackle him, Richardson managed to keep himself up long enough to throw the ball to Trey Sermon. Sermon caught the ball, but it wasn't enough for a first down, and Aaron Rodgers came back out with the Jets offense.
This time, they got a first down - their first one of the game - with less than two minutes left in the half. Rodgers managed to connect with Davante Adams for 24 yards, bringing them into Indianapolis territory and into field goal range. Rodgers then tried for another pass, but he was knocked down by Latu, while Jones had coverage on the receivers. That scrambled play was followed, though, by a completion to Breece Hall, who managed to run it in for a touchdown.
With just over :30 left to go, the Colts offense came back on the field, and Richardson threw directly to Pittman... who let it slip through his fingers with just three seconds to go. At that, Richardson opted to throw the ball, but into the stands, ending the half and giving a fan a souvenir. As the team jogged off the field, Richardson could be seen standing by the tunnel, giving his teammates high fives as they left.
This has been an ugly half for the Jets, who netted just nine yards in the first quarter, compared to 181 for the Colts. Overall, the Jets had 103 yards total - largely due to that last drive - compared to the Colts' 151. Richardson had eight completions out of 12 attempts for 103 passing yards, as well as 19 yards rushing.
