The Indianapolis Colts play their first real game on Sunday and head coach, Frank Reich, is excited to debut the new offense.

If you’ve been following the Indianapolis Colts throughout the offseason, you’ve heard reports from the organization about how the offense is much more promising with veteran quarterback Matt Ryan. However, if you watched Indy in the preseason, you didn’t see the supposedly promising offense. But, that was intentional.

After two preseason games where the starting offense of the Colts had rather underwhelming outings, Frank Reich and the team are confident that they know something that the world doesn’t. That something is Indy’s real offense because what was on display in the preseason was just vanilla plays so the guys could get some reps.

While some fans and some media members may be criticizing Indianapolis, saying that the team has yet to address the offensive issues from last season, Reich is pushing back by telling everyone to prepare for a surprise in the regular season, saying, “In the preseason, we did nothing. We did nothing. It was so generic.”

Colts will display a real offensive scheme against Texans

Indianapolis’ first game is against the Houston Texans, so there’s a chance that Indy still won’t have to get that deep into its playbook because the Colts have easily handled Houston in the last couple of meetings. They may be able to beat the Texans just with the vanilla plays that were used in the preseason.

However, if the Colts do open up the playbook on Sunday, it will be exciting to get an idea of the kind of offense Indy will have this season. One of the biggest differences from the preseason that will be on display on Sunday is Jonathan Taylor. Last year’s league leader in rushing yards and touchdowns didn’t play a single snap in the preseason.

It’s safe to assume that he’s still the focal point for the Colts offensively and the surprise scheme is revolved around him. With Taylor now in the lineup, everyone will be able to see how Reich plans to develop the passing game of the strong established run game.

The offense will probably consist of a lot of play-action and timing routes. With a quarterback like Ryan who specializes in accuracy and being on time, Reich has likely designed an offense that will involve a lot of crossing routes and action in the middle of the field with Indy’s massive tight ends.

Whatever the offense is, it needs to be an impressive one that can consistently put up points in multiple ways so the Colts can go far this season.
