Many may be shocked to observe how the Indianapolis Colts offense stacks up against the league’s best.

The Indianapolis Colts are 6-6, and they’ve had their fair share of ups and downs throughout the season. As of late, things have been mostly up. The Colts have won five of their last seven games and a lot of it is due to them becoming one of the best offenses in the NFL.

Yes, Indianapolis has one of the best offenses in the NFL. That may come as a shock to some because the Colts’ name isn’t usually mentioned with the top offenses in the league, but they need to be.

The reason they are often overlooked is because of their lack of star power. Aside from Jonathan Taylor, there aren’t any skill position players pulling in National headlines. The wide receiver unit is believed to be mediocre and many are still conflicted on how to view Carson Wentz, but that hasn’t stopped the Colts from putting up points.

To put things into perspective, take a look at how Indianapolis stacks up against the loaded offenses in the league that are expected to always be at the top of the list.

Colts score more than some of the NFL’s most loaded rosters

Indianapolis is the fourth-best scoring offense, averaging 28.3 points a game. That’s only slightly behind Dallas and Buffalo and ahead of explosive offenses like Arizona, Kansas City, and the Rams.

If a preseason poll was conducted to decide what teams would be in the top five offenses, not many would have chosen the Colts. They have exceeded their expectations and have shown they can run with the best.

Of course, Jonathan Taylor is a huge reason why, and so is the defense that’s forced the most turnovers in the NFL (creating short fields), but Frank Reich, Wentz, the receivers, and tight ends deserve some credit as well.

Wentz has thrown for greater than 250 yards four times this season, and Michael Pittman Jr. is having a breakout year, already recording 61 receptions, 805 yards, and five touchdowns.

This offense may not have the most flashy names or the biggest collection of Pro Bowlers, but they get the job done. They’ve been effective and various players have been prepared when their number was called. They will need to continue to excel as the Colts try to play themselves into the playoffs.
