A look at who the Colts may sign at tight end
By Ryan Stano
Tight end is something the Colts need to address, whether it’s via free agency or through the draft. Here are some candidates they can look at in free agency.
The Colts decided to part ways with Eric Ebron after a contentious second year in Indianapolis. Now that leaves them in the market for a second tight end to play opposite of Jack Doyle. There are actually several candidates in the free-agent market who make sense to replace him.
Hunter Henry is one of the top guys available. I already wrote about him here, so we won’t spend a lot of time on him. Just know that he is going to be one of the guys who a lot of teams will be looking at this offseason.
Austin Hooper might be one of the best, if not the best, guy out there as well. Hooper has made the Pro Bowl the last two seasons while in Atlanta. He caught 10 touchdowns over the past two seasons and had 787 yards receiving just last year on a bad team.
Hooper also has an excellent catch percentage, catching 77.3% of his passes in his career. He is more athletic than Doyle and is a better red-zone threat. He would be an excellent addition to the team. The problem is that he might be expensive, as he is coming off the best year of his career.
Jimmy Graham might be floating around out there too. He is a big sexy name, but would not be worth signing based on his production in the last few years. He hasn’t been any good since he left New Orleans. The Colts would likely pass on him.
Vance McDonald might be the next best option. He did have 610 yards in 2018 as well as four touchdowns. He might not be the most explosive guy, be is someone who is reliable in big spots. McDonald is likely going to be a relatively cheap option for someone out there. The Colts love cheap options.
The Colts could also opt to go into the draft pool to grab a tight end too. But based on the free-agent options, they very well could sign one of these guys.
