The Colts have plenty of questions up and down the roster. But maybe the most intriguing is in the defensive backfield. Who is now the team’s best DB?

Once Rashaan Melvin decided to sign with Oakland, the Colts immediately lost their best defensive back. Melvin was a lock down corner who could play most receivers one on one without much help. That opened up everything else for the defense.

With him no longer in Indy, it becomes difficult to decide who the best defensive back is on the roster. Everyone in the defensive backfield is extremely young, and not many players have had quality playing time to prove their worth.

Malik Hooker has the best chance to become the best player. He has great ball skills and can create turnovers with regularity. He has the potential to become the next Ed Reed. But he is still too young to be the best player right now, and only played half the season before getting hurt.

Quincy Wilson has a lot expected of him next season as well. He will be expected to step into a starting corner role and produce. The second round pick from a year ago has the tools in order to be successful, but has to stay healthy in order to make plays.

Matthias Farley might be the right answer here. He has been solid since he has been drafted, and has been able to stay on the field the longest. His durability is key for the future of the back seven. He can be a hard hitting safety as long as he is healthy.

The secondary is certainly very young. But they have an opportunity to grow together and to be a solid unit. Farley is a big key to how well that unit develops.
