Indianapolis Colts Hire Linebackers Coach for Frank Reich’s Staff
By Andrew Ites
The Colts continue to fill out their defensive coaching staff by bringing in a linebackers coach to work under defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus.
Indianapolis was stuck in a tough spot after Josh McDaniels backed out of his agreement and decided to stay in New England. The Colts had already hired some assistant coaches for Josh McDaniels’ staff, and they will honor the contracts they signed with those coaches.
One of the newest additions to the Colts’ coaching staff is Dave Borgonzi, who will be the linebackers coach for Frank Reich.
Borgonzi began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at Syracuse in 2006. In 2008, Borgonzi was hired by Harvard to be their assistant secondary coach.
Borgonzi got his first NFL coaching job with the Cowboys in 2011 where he worked as an offensive and defensive assistant on Jason Garrett’s first staff in Dallas. He stayed there for three seasons before he accepted a job as the defensive quality control coach with the Buccaneers in 2014.

Hiring the 35-year-old Borgonzi continues a trend of hiring up-and-coming young coaches on Frank Reich’s staff. Nick Sirianni, the new offensive coordinator in Indianapolis, is only 36 years old, and Raymond Ventrone, the new special teams coach, is only 35 years old.
Inside linebacker is one of the Colts’ biggest needs heading into this offseason so Borgonzi could be working with a lot of new faces in 2018.
Improving the linebacking corps in Indianapolis is extremely important to turning this defense around, and Borgonzi’s work in developing that group will be crucial in making that improvement.
