The Colts continue to shut down many of their key players for the rest of this season by placing cornerback Rashaan Melvin on injured reserve.

Rashaan Melvin was in the middle of a fantastic year before he injured his hand while making a diving interception at home against the Titans. He has not been able to return to the field since suffering that injury in Week 12, and his 2017 season is officially over after being placed on injured reserve.

Melvin joins an injured reserve list that is littered with important players that could have turned around this nightmare season if they were healthy:

  • Malik Hooker
  • Ryan Kelly
  • John Simon
  • Henry Anderson
  • Jack Mewhort
  • Jon Bostic
  • Pierre Desir

Melvin ends his breakout season with career-highs in interceptions (3) and pass breakups (13). This year was a perfect time for Melvin to have the best season of his career as he enters free agency this offseason.

The Colts’ front office will have a difficult decision to make in whether to bring back Melvin next season, and at what price. Melvin could be asking for a lot of money from Indianapolis if he hits the open market.

The best-case scenario would’ve been for Melvin to play in these final five games, so the Colts’ front office could have a larger sample size to look at in determining his value this offseason. They have a little over a season and a half of footage of Melvin in Indianapolis, and he’s put some great plays on tape during 2016 and 2017.

It’s disappointing to see another star player go down with a season-ending injury, but we will hopefully be seeing a return from Melvin in a Colts uniform in 2018.
