Both quarterbacks performed pretty well in the Colts’ win over the Steelers, so Chuck Pagano will wait to name a starter.

Scott Tolzien has been given every opportunity to take this backup quarterback spot and run with it, but his subpar play has left the job wide open through three weeks of the preseason.

Tolzien got off to a strong start in Saturday night’s preseason game against the Steelers, but he made a huge mistake throwing an interception directly to Ryan Shazier.

He still ended the night with some very strong, but possibly misleading, statistics completing 7 of 10 passes for 123 yards. However, 55 of those passing yards came on a long catch and run from Donte Moncrief.

Stephen Morris got his first action with the starting offense, and he made the most of it. Morris put in his third strong performance of the preseason completing 12 of 16 passes for 143 yards, and the offense was humming with him under center yet again.

Morris made another push for a possible Week 1 start with Andrew Luck likely on the sidelines, but Tolzien played well enough to keep himself in the competition. Pagano was asked about the quarterback situation after the game, and he didn’t give any indication of who he is favoring.

"“They both moved the offense and did a good job.”"

Stephen Morris has become the fan-favorite to win the job as Scott Tolzien doesn’t inspire much excitement among the fanbase. However, Morris still hasn’t played in an NFL game, and no one knows how he will react under the bright lights.

While Tolzien may be the “safer” option, Morris has shown that he has much higher upside this preseason.
