The Indianapolis Colts announced on Wednesday that the team has signed undrafted New Mexico State cornerback Winston Rose and waived safety Akeem Davis in a corresponding move.
The 5’11”, 177 pound cornerback cornerback shined in his senior season for the Aggies, recording 51 tackles including 2 tackles for loss and 6 passes defensed in 11 games.
It was reported that the Colts expressed “late interest” in Rose right before the draft, and that has clearly been confirmed by the team’s latest signing.
Rose originally signed with the Los Angeles Rams following the draft, but was subsequently released. The Colts had him in for a private workout and apparently liked what they saw:
Despite playing at an unheralded football program, Rose could be a solid developmental cornerback for the Colts and could be able to contribute immediately on special teams–should he make the final 53-man roster.
He posted impressive physical measurables at his pro day:
Right now, the top of the Colts cornerback depth chart appears set with Vontae Davis, Patrick Robinson, Darius Butler, and D’Joun Smith. However, there’s likely a spot or two open that Rose could potentially win in order to stick.
Departing is Akeem Davis, who appeared in 3 games for the Colts last season, and recorded 2 tackles and a forced fumble–largely contributing on special teams.
