Former Colts pass rusher Jonathan Newsome had marijuana charges against him dropped following a February arrest.
The Colts took a zero tolerance approach when a fringe player was arrested this offseason. On February 17, Jonathan Newsome was arrested at his home in Zionsville and was initially charged with marijuana possession. The arrest prompted the Colts to release the two-year player just days after.
Newsome took a plea deal that charged him with one count of maintaining a common nuisance. It will go down as a Class A misdemeanor and place him on probation for a year. The marijuana charges were dismissed.
The police were called to Newsome’s home in mid-February for a noise complaint. They obtained a search warrant and found marijuana and paraphernalia that included scales, smoking devices, and a body-cleansing kit to beat drug tests.
It is safe to say that Newsome will be in the NFL substance abuse program if he signs with another team.
Newsome took to twitter to celebrate the charges being dropped.

Might not be the best time to dab when you are looking for a new job in the NFL. Newsome’s career had a promising start. He led the Colts in sacks with 6.5 during his rookie year, the first rookie to do so since Dwight Freeney in 2002. Newsome’s numbers fell off a cliff in his second season where he finished with just one sack, a forced fumble, and a few tackles.
Meanwhile, the Colts are still looking for a talented pass rusher but there’s not chance they’ll bring back Newsome. It was clear that Newsome was on thin ice with the team and the arrest was merely the last straw. Newsome will likely end up with some team as a camp body, but it won’t be in Indianapolis.
Newsome will always have his game changing strip-sack of Peyton Manning in the 2015 playoffs for his NFL highlight reel.
